The Florida Family Literacy Academy established by Jeb Bush supports the Florida Literacy Initiative, Healthy Start, Early Learning Coalition, and the Calhoun County School System by providing a program dedicated to serving undereducated parents with children birth - 3rd grade. The Academy provides academic instruction that covers Adult Education, Children's Emergent Literacy, Parenting Skills, Health Literacy, and Parent & Child Together Time. Minor mothers, single parent households, and families whose first language is not English are provided basic education and skills to help their children succeed in school. Minor mothers are provided support to stay in school, particiapte in pre-natal care, and bond with their infants. Parents are assisted in obtaining childcare. The Calhoun County Public LIbrary provides school readiness story time for parents and children birth - 3rd grades. Story Time supports No Child Left Behind, the Early Learning Coalition, and the Calhoun County School System's initiatives that every child be ready to enter and succeed in school. Parents are provided age-appropriate instruction , including parenting and helath information, so that they can help their child. Children are exposed to a literature rich library environment that uses books, puppetry, music, dance and art to develop critical thinking and learning skills.
